The most important historical places near Novi Sad
Monasteries of Fruška gora
In the forests of this Srem mountain, a former island in the ancient Pannonian Sea, there are numerous monasteries of exceptional beauty and historical significance for the Serbian people. There are a total of sixteen of them, but here we will show you only the five most important ones.
Novo Hopovo
This is perhaps the most famous monastery in this region and is located on the southern slopes of the mountain, not far from the road to Irig. It was built at the end of the 15th century and is the endowment of the Serbian despot Maksim Branković. Novo Hopovo is a cultural monument of exceptional importance for Serbian culture and tradition.
Rakovac Monastery
This monastery was also built at the end of the 15th century and is the endowment of the great despot Jovan Brankovic. Unfortunately, during the restoration of the church, the oldest frescoes were destroyed and erased from the walls, but the church received a richly carved iconostasis and new frescoes, painted with the most modern artistic techniques of the time.
Velika Remeta Monastery
This monastery is another in a series of sights of Fruška gora. It is located on its southernmost side and is dedicated to Saint Demetrius, whose name the church of the monastery also bears. Within the monastery, there are two spacious stone chapels and a baroque bell tower, dedicated to St. John the Baptist.
Krusedol Monastery
This monastery was the endowment of Brankovic, the last despots in Srem. The temple is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Most Holy Mother of God. It is believed that the construction of the monastery was started by despot Djordje Brankovic (monk Maxim) at the beginning of the 16th century and that it lasted for 50 years.
Grgeteg
This nunnery is located next to the dense Fruška Gora forest. Legend has it that the monastery of Grgeteg with the Church of Saint Nicholas was founded by the Dragon Fire Wolf for his blind father in the 15th century. In addition to the iconostasis painted by Uroš Predić in 1902, there is an icon of the Three Hands in the church, due to which many pilgrims visit the monastery.
